With the Obama administration arrival only a few weeks away, the discussion about CCHIT’s long-term viability is starting to heat up. Even though I am on the Child Health Workgroup and appreciate the effort and intelligence of the civilians working with me, I still have grave concerns about the process and it’s effect on EHR development. I’m sure it has benefited any number of physicians, but in the sphere that I work in (private pediatric offices), all it has really done is increase costs and eliminate vendors.
I’m not alone in my thinking. Some of the folks over at emrupdate.com (namely, Dr. Al Borges) have been quite vocal about it. You can see his comment here on histalk2.com, which led me to a damning article on ZDNet and other links.

Rough times will not satisfy those of us
who are sick and tired of the non-profit tax exempt carnival operators
like HIMSS. I have experience with HIMSS, I participated in the CCHIT
public comments and know what is involved.
Here is a fact or two perhaps you did not know.
CCHIT is an outgrowth of HIMSS which is the effector arm of the
Electronic Health Records Vendor Association (EHRVA). CCHIT was founded
and seeded by Steve Lieber and Mark Leavitt.
Mark Leavitt was and is the CMO of HIMSS and is now the CCHIT
Chairman. HIMSS and CCHIT were housed side by side at the HIMSS
location : 230 E. OHIO St, Chicago. While CCHIT receives grant money
from the US Government it contracts HIMSS to provide services which
makes HIMSS a “contractor”. The former HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt was a
keynote speaker at HIMSS annual conference, Mark Leavitt of CCHIT has
the same last name.
HIMSS has developed cozy government relationships; CMS, CCHIT, ONC,
HITSP, AHIC, just to name a few. HIMSS is basically a lobbyist
organization and a 501(C) 6 TAX DODGING, FOR-PROFIT staffed by
non-technical and non-clinical people who would make decisions for 300
million Americans about the kind of health care they receive.
As far as this writer is concerned, the whole tax dodging , money
grubbing , smoke and mirrors nested operation and the revolving door to
government needs to be exposed. Hopefully this post is a step in that
direction. RockyOstrand

Open source healthcare IT solutions have been gaining popularity with the federal government ever since Democratic
Representative from California, Pete Stark promoted open source as a
low-cost and viable approach to EHRs in a proposed bill back in
September. The government has also pointed to the success it has had in
making its VA EHR solution, VistA available as Open Source Software
(OSS) in helping rural communities implement EHRs.
