Flu Vaccine Codes

Hello, I just received my issue of Primary Care Coding and Reimbursement
and in there it give 4 new Flu Vaccine Codes:

90664, 90666, 90667 and 90668

Do these new codes replace all of the codes from last year?

Last year we used

90660 - for Flu Mist
90658 for any child over 3 years of age and
90657 for any child under the age of 3.
G9141 for H1N1

Thanks

Flu Vaccine Codes

Donna,

Here is a link explaining what those codes are. My interpretation is that
they are the monovalent H1N1-2009 CPT codes. This year we did not charge
for the H1N1 vaccine, just the administration code. I think these might be
the actual CPT code that is finally assigned a number?

Your regular influenza codes 90655, 90656, 90657, 90658 and 90660 are
probably still the same codes we use in the fall.

Take a peek at this cdc site and scroll down...
http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/iis/stds/cpt.htm

Now, I am not a coder. Anyone else take a look at the code descriptions and
give your opinions? Alison?

Flu Vaccine Codes

Hi All,

The new codes are *in addition to* the old. They would not replace
anything already being used.

Additional confusion arose when folks realized that H1N1 is part of the
seasonal formulation this year. I have heard stories of manufacturer
reps disagreeing with one another and advising use of completely
different codes for the same product (from reps in the SAME COMPANY!).

Inclusion of H1N1 should NOT affect coding for the seasonal vaccine.

OLD codes:

90655: Influenza virus vaccine, split virus, preservative free, 6-35
mos, IM

90656: ...split virus, preservative free, 3 yrs&older, IM

90657: ...split virus, 6-35 mos, IM

90658: ...split virus, 3 yrs&older, IM

90660: ...live, intranasal

90663: ...pandemic formulation, H1N1

NEW codes:

90664 Influenza virus vaccine, pandemic formulation, live, intranasal

90666 ... pandemic form, split virus, preserv free, IM

90667 ... pandemic form, split virus, preserv free, adjuvant, IM

90668 ... pandemic form, split virus, IM

Flu Vaccine Codes

Jan,

The NEW codes....are they intended for MONOVALENT pandemic vaccine i.e. just
the "plain" H1N1 vaccine? Not the trivalent (seasonal) vaccine?

Bottom line is STILL USE THE SEASONAL FLU VACCINE CODES THAT WE USED LAST
YEAR, correct? Don't change them in your billing system!

Am I on track?

Flu Vaccine Codes

Hi Karen,

Your bottom line is correct. The new codes will apply if and only if
a monovalent pandemic vaccine is again recommended.
