"sacral dimple"

Anyone know the correct ICD9 code for this? The closest I can find is
parasacral dimple, which is supposed to be the same as a pilonidal cyst.
I'm not sure this is the correct one to use.

A search for "dimple" in Encoder Pro only showed what you found:

685.0 - Pilonidal Cyst with Abscess
685.1 - Pilonidal Cyst without mention of Abscess

We've always used 685.1 to code for an uncomplicated parasacral dimple, but
it looks like there really isn't a good ICD9 code for this diagnosis.

When it comes to coding for insurance purposes, I think that it's close
enough.

The entire idea of coding every human malady in a number from 1 to
99,999 is crazy to begin with. I don't spend too much time making sure
that each code is a precise match.

I agree with Gary that close enough should be good
enough. It's not like the dimples are really a
DISEASE (the D in ICD-9) anyway.

Just for kicks, you could also use
"757.9 Unspecified anomaly of the integument"
for insurance purposes if you want. Bottom line, you
write "Deep Sacral Dimple" in your chart notes, which
is really what matters. The only time I would see a
need for the ICD-9 would be if you order an ultrasound
to check for a tethered cord or a communicating sinus,
and the dimple is the only diagnosis you're working
with.
