My father retired and gave me his old otoscope powered by an
incandescent bulb. You can't see much at all.
Twenty five years ago, Welch-Allyn came out with the halogen otoscope.
There was a rapid increase in the diagnosis of otitis media. While there
are a lot of reasons for the increase, don't discount the the improved
technology.
Now I have the MacroView otoscope, and I have suddenly started seeing
less otitis media. I think it's because I can see even better. The
"possible otitis" is now clearly "not otitis".
(not an advertisement.)
Why I am seeing less otitis media
Bill- I absolutely and totally agree. I have 5 exam rooms with otoscopes-
the three I use most often have Macro Views the other two (one is the triage
area and the other the procedure room) serve as overflow and have the old
Welch-Allyn heads. I noticed that I was more likely to dx an otitis in the
overflow rooms. At first I thought it was because when I use those rooms to
examine patients I was usually really busy and tired but as I thought about
it and made a conscientious effort not to do that I found that it wasn't me-
it was the otoscopes!
Have you gotten one of the Macro View ophthalmascopes? I haven't but our ER
has them- too cool!

Why I am seeing less otitis media
Can you just buy the new Welch Allyn MacroView Otoscope heads and still use
your old Welch Allyn handle/base chargers?

Why I am seeing less otitis media

Why I am seeing less otitis media
Vince- Yes you can but they aren't cheap! Also, the disposable ear
speculums or whatever those things are called are not interchangable with
the old models.

Why I am seeing less otitis media
to be accurate the new ones will work with the old model but old speculi
will not work with the new model.

Why I am seeing less otitis media
The new handles are remarkably lighter, but for the time being, the new head works just fine on my "old" handles. One day I guess I'll spring for the new handles, but there's definitely no NEED to replace the old handles and chargers.

RE: Why I am seeing less otitis media
I have fit the new head on the old handle but agree that the new handles are
much better.
